There is room for light to medium layers. The coat doesn't feel heavy like a lot of long winter coats do. Important to me, it doesn't feel binding in the arms or shoulders. I stepped out into cold gusty rainy weather, and didn't feel a thing! Quality is good. Not a fashionable coat, but the sort of coat you want for a long walk to the parking lot, or a long drive home, after your car has sat outside in freezing weather.
