Two factors determine what kind of leather a piece is. The first factor is what kind of animal the original skin came from – the most prevalent is cow hide, but lambskin is gaining in popularity.   The second factor is how that piece of animal skin, whatever type it is, was processed.

• Full-grain leather – This type of leather is the at the top of the quality ladder, and it is in its natural state, barring removal of the fur and tanning.
• Top-grain leather – This type of leather is a step down from full grain.  It is sanded due to flaws in the original piece of hide, and then given an artificial grain to cover these imperfections.
